Canadian-owned Businesses A Major Source of Investment in Southern California

In a recent report by the World Trade Center Los Angeles, "Foreign Direct Investment in Southern California", Canada ranks as the 5th largest source of foreign direct investment in the region. The report profiles the significant economic impact of Canadian-owned businesses across six counties: Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside and Ventura as follows:

  • There are over 740 Canadian-owned firms
  • Canadian-owned enterprises account for 26, 230 direct jobs and 59,130 direct, indirect and induced jobs
  • Total wages at these firms represent over $1.7 billion dollars annually
  • Canadian-owned enterprises support over 6,100 jobs in manufacturing, over 4,400 jobs in professional/business services, over 4,300 jobs in financial activities, over 2,700 jobs in wholesale trade and over 2,000 jobs in retail trade
  • 44% of jobs are based in Los Angeles County followed by 21% in Orange County, 16% in San Diego County, 11% in San Bernardino County, 6% in Riverside County and 2% in Ventura County.
  • Canada is the second highest source of FDI in San Bernardino County
  • Between 2003-2015, Canada has invested more than $759mm in Southern California greenfield projects
  • 53% of greenfield projects were in Los Angeles County followed by 30% in San Diego County, 10% in Orange County and 7% in Riverside County
